President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed a special investigator, Jim Osayande Obazee, the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, FRCN, to probe the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Reports say that the investigator is expected to examine the activities of the apex bank, as well as key government entities.
Recall that following his ascension to power as the president of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu had ordered the arrest of Godwin Emefiele, former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, on June 9, 2023 by the Department of State Security.
The letter from the presidency reads: “Following the fundamental objective outlined in Section 15(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), this administration is today continuing the fight against corruption by appointing you as a Special Investigator to investigate the CBN and Related Entities. This appointment shall be with immediate effect, and you are to report directly to my office,” the letter stated.
Emefiele has since after his arrest by the DSS remained in their custody despite recent court ruling by the Federal High Court in Ikoyi Lagos that he should be remanded in the Nigerian Correctional Prisons pending the fulfillment of his N20million bail term.
