THE Federal Executive Council (FEC), at its meeting on Monday, chaired by President Bola Tinubu, undertook some radical reforms to ease the hardship in the country and cut the cost of governance by the adoption of the Orosanye Report.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents at the end of the FEC meeting, at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Idris said that FEC at the meeting made far reaching decisions on how best the government can serve the people. According to the Minister, with the adoption of the report, the government has decided to reshuffle some ministries and parastatals of government. He said while some agencies, commissions and departments of government have been merged, some others have been scrapped while others have been subsumed and others moved under new ministries for optimum performance.
“Now, what that means is that a number of agencies, commissions, and some departments have actually been scrapped, some have been merged, while others have been subsumed. Others, of course, have also been moved from some ministries to others where government feels they will operate better.
“Like I said, this is a very far-reaching decision. It is aimed, one, to fine-tune or to restructure government operations as a whole. Secondly, it’s in line also with decision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reduce the cost of governance”, he said.
He, however, explained that the adoption of the report did not mean people working in the affected agencies and departments will lose their jobs.
Here are some of the key recommendations for implementation :
FEC has approved the construction of Lagos-Port Harcourt-Calabar Coastal Superhighway
Social Security payments to be made to the vulnerable households to commence immediately
Also Social Security payments to be extended to graduates from NCE and upwards
The Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria to be merged with the Voice Of Nigeria
National Salaries Income and Wages to be subsumed under Revenue Mobilisation and Fiscal Commission. The National Assembly will need to amend the constitution as RMAFC was established by the constitution, among other reforms.
