By Oluchi Onwa

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has decided to go ahead with its proposed protest slated for Tuesday and Wednesday, the 27th and 28th of February, 2024, despite entreaties by the Federal Government to make them back down.

This is coming even as the Nigeria Police Force has vowed to ensure that the rights and freedom of protesters are protected should the NLC proceed with the protest as planned.

NLC on its part has promised to ensure a peaceful protest.

Speaking after a closed-door meeting hosted by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation SGF, Senator George Akume in his office, NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero said it is the duty of security agencies to provide cover for peaceful protesters, adding that their demands will be presented to the National Assembly.

The Force Headquarters assured that personnel have been placed on red alert and will be deployed to ensure peaceful protest, promising to remain vigilant against any attempts to hijack such protests by individuals or groups of persons with ulterior motives

A statement by Force headquarters said, “On the heels of the proposed nationwide protest by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the NPF hereby affirms the fundamental right of all citizens of the country to engage in peaceful protest in line with extant laws.
