The Lagos State House of Assembly has addressed recent reports about the purported invasion of its complex by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on the morning of February 17, 2025. The Acting Clerk of the House, A. Ottun, clarified that the DSS officers were present at the Assembly’s request to ensure security and maintain order during plenary sessions.
In his statement, Ottun explained, “The assembly called upon security agencies to ensure the safety of the premises and maintain order. There was no attempt to seal off any offices.”
In a letter dated February 14, 2025, the Acting Clerk had informed the DSS Director in Lagos and other heads of security agencies about intelligence reports indicating plans by a group to forcibly reinstate the impeached Speaker on February 18, 2025. The House expressed concerns that such an action could pose a potential security threat to its members and operations.
The letter, titled “Urgent: Enhanced Security Measures for LSHA Premises,” highlighted the urgent need for increased security to prevent any breaches. It read in part: “We request that necessary measures be taken to fortify the security of the Assembly premises starting from February 16, 2025, by increasing the presence of security personnel and ensuring strict access control.”
This request comes in light of the impeachment of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, on January 13, 2025, due to allegations of high-handedness, gross misconduct, and abuse of office. Obasa, who had served as Speaker since 2015, was replaced by his deputy Mojisola Meranda. He has dismissed the allegations and vowed to contest his removal in court.
The Assembly’s action was taken to prevent any potential disruptions to its proceedings and safeguard the welfare of its members.
