NUPENG has called off its strike after Dangote Refinery agreed to recognize workers’ right to unionise.
The agreement was reached on Tuesday, at a meeting in Abuja attended by the Minister of Finance, NLC officials, and representatives of both parties. The resolution is seen as a key step in settling the dispute, which had threatened nationwide fuel distribution.
Earlier, NUPENG went on strike, saying Dangote management was blocking workers from joining the union, which goes against labour laws that protect freedom of association. The strike raised concerns about possible fuel shortages and economic problems, leading top government officials to step in.
Now that the agreement has been reached, Dangote will officially recognise NUPENG as the union for its petroleum and gas workers. Dangote will allow employees join the union freely, give union representatives access to workers, and start talks on pay, working conditions, and other job issues.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment is expected to issue an official statement confirming the resolution of the dispute. Labour leaders say they will continue to monitor compliance with the agreement while reaffirming their commitment to dialogue as a tool for resolving industrial crises.
