The Non-Teaching Staff of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), have declared readiness to join the nationwide indefinite strike being considered by their national leadership if the Federal Government fails to meet their demands before October 6.
Comrade Linus Akata, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and Comrade William Amu, Chairman of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) in UNN, disclosed this on Friday while addressing journalists in Nsukka.
They said members were already mobilised ahead of the deadline. “Once JAC declares the strike, it will be total and comprehensive,” they warned.
According to them, the government should be held responsible for any disruption in academic activities, having been given ample time to resolve outstanding issues.
Among their grievances are the federal government’s silence on the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, the continued withholding of salaries of members who participated in the 2022 strike, and the failure to release two months of withheld salaries as a demonstration of good faith.
They also cited unremitted third-party deductions from previously paid salaries and unpaid earned allowances as lingering issues fueling workers’ frustration.
The union leaders maintained that only a swift intervention from the government could avert the looming nationwide shutdown of public universities.
