The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has raised an alarm about the practice of democracy in the country, calling on the international community especially the United States to come and save democracy in Nigeria.
The call came after the chaos that erupted at the PDP National Secretariat in Wadata Plaza, Abuja on Tuesday, when two factions of the party clashed while attempting to hold important meetings in the same venue.
The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed reportedly claimed that himself and his Oyo State counterpart, Seyi Makinde were tear-gassed during the incident.
Speaking with newsmen after the incident, the newly elected Chairman of the party, Tanimu Turaki alleged that some persons were also shot by the police.
He said, “Some of our boys who have come here to attend meetings have been shot by the police.
“We are now calling on the international community… I want to call on President Trump, what its not just genocide against Christians, he should come and save democracy in Nigeria.
“Democracy in Nigeria is under threat. I’m calling on all other developed nations, come and save Nigeria.”
Recall that over the weekend, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, a former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, was elected the new National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
His emergence was confirmed on Saturday night by former Anambra Central senator, Ben Obi, who served as the Chief Returning Officer at the PDP National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Obi announced that Turaki became the consensus choice after the party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Katsina State, Lado Danmarke, stepped down from the contest.
It was also at that convention that the Party announced the expulsion of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, former governor, Ayodele Fayose and others for anti-party activities.
