The alleged discovery of arms at the Kebbi State residence of former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami reportedly led to his re-arrest by the Department of State Security, DSS. The arms were allegedly found during a recent search of his country home by officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
According to reports by the National Post, DSS officials reportedly took Malami into custody on Monday, shortly after he left Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja. He had been held there on a Federal High Court remand order after being arraigned by the EFCC on corruption charges.
In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mohammed Bello Doka, Malami had earlier accused the secret police of mounting surveillance around Kuje Prison with the intention of taking him into custody upon his release.
Malami’s current legal troubles began with investigations by the EFCC over alleged financial improprieties linked to his tenure as Attorney-General and Minister of Justice.
Malami’s latest rearrest by the DSS is believed to be connected specifically to the arms allegedly found at his Kebbi home, a matter said to be outside the scope of the initial EFCC charges.
However, the DSS has yet to issue an official statement confirming or denying the reported re-arrest.
