Aviation Workers’ Protest Grounds Flights, Strands Passengers at Enugu Airport

Passengers at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, were left stranded on Friday, following a protest by aviation workers that disrupted flight operations at the facility.

The workers’ action was triggered by the Federal Government’s recent decision to concession the airport to a private Nigerian investor. Aviation unions opposed to the move alleged that the agreement was reached without adequate consultation or consideration for staff welfare.

Reports indicate that the protest was directed by the national leadership of the aviation unions in Abuja and Lagos. The workers claimed that the airport had been handed over to interests linked to a South-East governor and an Anambra-based businessman, a development they said failed to protect their jobs and working conditions.

Acting on instructions from their national offices, union members shut down operations at the airport, preventing both departures and arrivals. Passengers already waiting in the terminal were politely asked to leave as workers locked offices and operational areas.

As a result, several flights scheduled to and from Enugu, particularly services from Abuja and Lagos, were cancelled, leaving many travelers frustrated and uncertain about alternative arrangements.

Aviation authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the protest, while affected passengers have appealed for urgent intervention to restore normal flight activities.
