The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday released the official timetable and schedule for the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for what is expected to be a pivotal electoral cycle.
The announcement comes amid heightened political tension and ongoing controversy surrounding recent amendments to the Electoral Act, which have sparked debates across the country over the credibility and transparency of future polls.
Speaking in Abuja, the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed that the Presidential Election will be held on February 20, 2027, while the governorship National Assembly, and State House of Assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.
In a notable departure from previous practice, INEC confirmed that the National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly elections will now be conducted simultaneously, while the presidential poll will take place separately on an earlier date.
Prof. Amupitan stated that the publication of the timetable was in compliance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), assuring stakeholders of the Commission’s commitment to a transparent and credible process.
Political observers say the revised structure will shape campaign strategies, voter mobilisation efforts, and the broader political landscape ahead of 2027.
