Bishop Kukah Condemns Killing Of Female Student In Sokoto, Calls For Investigation  Urges Calm

The Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Sokoto, Most Reverend Mathew Hassan Kukah has condemned the stoning to death of a 200 level female Christian student, Deborah Yakubu, of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, on Thursday, 12, May 2022.

Reports say that Deborah had allegedly made some remarks on a WhatsApp group she belonged to with her fellow students, which the Muslim students in the group claimed was blasphemy against the Prophet Mohammed.

According to reports, this took place during the Muslim moon of Ramadan when the College was on break. On resumption of school on Thursday, the male Muslim students on sighting her allegedly surrounded her and pelted stones at her, until she fell and died and then they set her body ablaze.

In a statement Thursday, Bishop Kukah condemned in very strong terms the killing of the female students and called on the authorities to commence a full blown investigation into the killing and bring to book the perpetrators of such dastardly act. According to him, this was the only way to appease the families of the deceased.

The Bishop, however, said that what happened has nothing to do with religion as both Christians and Muslims have been living peacefully together in Sokoto over the years.

He called on all to remain calm and prayed for the repose of the deceased.
