“If Making Such a Promise Qualifies Me for Psychiatric Evaluation…” — Obi Hits Back at Critics Over One-Term Pledge

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections and former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, has fired back at critics who scoffed at his pledge to serve only a single term if elected Nigeria’s president in 2027.

Obi, who restated his commitment to a four-year presidency, said the doubt cast on his vow was not unexpected, considering the track record of broken promises in Nigeria’s political space.

“They are judging me by their standards – where political promises are made to be broken,” Obi said, dismissing the skepticism as a projection of the political class’s own failings.

The former governor noted that fulfilling his governance agenda within a single four-year term was not only achievable but grounded in precedent, citing his past performance in public office.
“They forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth. I have a verifiable track record that speaks louder than speculation,” he added.

In a sharp retort to insinuations that his single-term declaration was unrealistic — or even delusional — Obi quipped:
“If making such a promise qualifies me for psychiatric evaluation, then we may as well question the mental fitness of those who framed our Constitution, which stipulates a four-year renewable tenure.”

The statement comes amid renewed political debate over succession plans and leadership promises ahead of the 2027 polls.
