The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed reports of a possible merger with the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) ahead of an anticipated court judgment.
In a statement issued by the party’s spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, denied that the ADC leadership is engaged in any negotiations with other political parties at this time.
“We would like to state categorically that this is not true. The coalition leadership is not having any such conversation with any political party at the moment,” Abdullahi said.
He said that the party is focused on challenging what it described as “illegal actions” taken against its leadership by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alleging interference by agents of the ruling party.
“We are fully committed to ensuring that the illegal action taken against our leadership by INEC and other agents of the ruling party is upturned. This is the only path to safeguarding the rule of law and ensuring that multiparty democracy survives in Nigeria,” he added.
Abdullahi said no discussion suggested they were ready to jump ship, and abandon ADC, for now, but noted the party was open to broader opposition collaboration.
“Any suggestion that we are considering abandoning the ADC is preemptive and speculative, and should be ignored,” he stated.
The party also expressed confidence in Nigeria’s judiciary to deliver a fair ruling despite concerns over political pressure.
According to Abdullahi “The ADC leadership remains confident that the judicial institutions will, at this defining moment, resist the pressure to be complicit in undermining Nigeria’s democracy,”
