Air Peace Passengers Stranded at Owerri Airport Amid Sudden Flight Cancellation

Passengers Express Frustration Over Lack of Alternatives and Compassion from Airline

On a chaotic Sunday evening, numerous passengers found themselves stranded at Owerri Airport when the anticipated 5:40 PM Air Peace flight failed to materialize. The abrupt announcement, just thirty minutes before boarding, left travelers infuriated, prompting some to take drastic measures.

Fiscal Posts gathered that incensed passengers held airline workers hostage, demanding immediate alternative flight arrangements for the same day. Among those affected, Mrs. Nnolim Okoye, an American businesswoman in the country for festive celebrations, voiced her anger. She revealed her concern that if a prompt solution wasn’t provided, she might miss her Monday flight from Lagos to the United States, incurring substantial financial and emotional costs. Okoye criticized the airline staff for their perceived lack of compassion, particularly towards passengers who had journeyed from distant locations such as Aba and other southeastern states to catch their flights.

Clement Vincent, a private university lecturer, expressed disappointment over the situation. He had embarked on the journey on a Sunday to avoid the Monday ‘sit-at-home,’ but the unexpected flight cancellation left him in a precarious situation. Vincent pointed out the uncertainty surrounding the availability of flights on Monday due to the ‘sit-at-home’ order and Governor Uzodinma’s inauguration event in Imo State.

“Tomorrow Monday is ‘sit-at-home, and Governor Uzodinma of Imo State will be hosting his inaugural event for his second term win in office, so, we are not even sure there will be any flight tomorrow”, he said, adding that even if there was going to be flight, which he doubts, he asked, ” how does one get to the airport given that everyone will be observing the sit-at-home orders?”

Realizing the futility of persuading the airline management, some affluent passengers opted to charter a car to Port Harcourt in hopes of catching the 7:00 PM Arik flight to Lagos on the same day.

An anonymous traveler expressed frustration, stating that local airlines in Nigeria seemed to act with impunity due to the absence of penalties for such irresponsible actions. In more developed aviation industries, airlines typically provide accommodations, logistics, and expenses for stranded passengers, a practice seemingly lacking in Nigeria.

Despite efforts to obtain a statement from Air Peace management regarding the sudden flight cancellation, none of the on-duty staff were willing to comment, leaving passengers to navigate the situation on their own without avenues for seeking redress.

The incident raises concerns about accountability in the country’s aviation sector and the need for measures to address the challenges faced by passengers in such circumstances.
