The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s respect for the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), describing the recent meeting between President Bola Tinubu and the bishops as a demonstration of the administration’s commitment to constructive dialogue and national unity. His remarks mark a more measured and conciliatory response following public criticism of earlier reactions by some presidential aides to the bishops’ message.
Speaking in an interview aired by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Akume said the Tinubu administration welcomes honest and patriotic counsel from religious leaders, stressing that the Catholic Church remains a key partner in nation-building. He noted that the bishops’ visit provided an opportunity for frank discussions on the country’s economic, security, and social challenges, adding that the government values such engagements in the interest of Nigerians.
“The President listened attentively to the bishops because he believes every well-intentioned voice deserves to be heard,” Akume said. “Religious leaders have always played an important role in shaping our national conscience, and the government remains open to sincere advice that will move the country forward.”
The SGF also emphasised that disagreements over national issues should not be viewed as hostility but as part of democratic engagement. According to him, government and faith-based organisations share a common objective of promoting peace, justice, national cohesion, and improved welfare for citizens. He called for sustained dialogue built on mutual respect rather than confrontation.
Akume reiterated that the Tinubu administration remains committed to addressing insecurity, reviving the economy, and expanding opportunities for Nigerians, while acknowledging that citizens expect faster results. He reportedly assured that the government would continue to engage religious bodies, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders in shaping policies aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
