United Bank for Africa (UBA) has announced the retirement of its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, bringing to a close a transformative 12-year stint on the bank’s board in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s tenure guidelines for non-executive directors. The bank also named seasoned banker and corporate executive Emmanuel Nnorom as its new Group Chairman, with the appointment taking effect on August 21, 2026.

Elumelu, 63, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most influential businessmen, having led the turnaround of the defunct Standard Trust Bank before engineering its landmark merger with UBA in 2005 and transforming the institution into a leading pan-African banking group. Beyond banking, he chairs Heirs Holdings, Transcorps Plc,  and Heirs Energies, while his Tony Elumelu Foundation has empowered thousands of young African entrepreneurs through funding, mentorship, and business training. His enduring legacy at UBA includes expanding the bank’s footprint across Africa and strengthening its position as one of the continent’s foremost financial institutions.

Although stepping down from UBA marks the end of an era, it is unlikely to signal retirement from public life. Given his age, energy, and continued influence in business, Elumelu is expected to devote even greater attention to expanding his investment empire, deepening his advocacy for Africapitalism, supporting entrepreneurship across the continent, and pursuing fresh opportunities in power, energy, healthcare, and other strategic sectors through Heirs Holdings. While his next move remains undisclosed, industry observers expect him to remain a dominant voice in Africa’s economic development.

His successor, Emmanuel Nnorom, is a respected banker and boardroom strategist with decades of experience in financial services, investment management, and corporate governance. A Non-Executive Director of UBA before his elevation, he has also served in key leadership positions across several leading companies, earning a reputation for prudent management, strategic insight, and sound corporate leadership.

Nnorom inherits one of Africa’s strongest banking franchises at a time of rapid technological change and expanding regional opportunities. His experience in governance, finance, and institutional leadership is expected to provide continuity while positioning UBA for its next phase of growth, building on the solid foundation laid by Elumelu’s visionary leadership over the past decade.
