Kaduna’s Mineral Bonanza: Can Gold, Platinum, and Rare Earths Reshape Nigeria’s Economy?

By Felix Olukayode

The Federal Government has announced the discovery of what it describes as a world-class polymetallic mineral province in Kaduna State, containing significant deposits of platinum group metals, gold, nickel, copper, lithium, and rare earth elements. The discovery, which was verified by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), was unveiled by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, at the African Natural Resources and Energy Investment Summit (AFNIS) 2026 in Abuja.

Describing the find as one of the most important breakthroughs in Nigeria’s mining sector in recent years, Alake said the deposits have “exceptionally high grades” and could position Nigeria as a major player in the global market for strategic minerals used in clean energy technologies, batteries, electronics, and advanced manufacturing.

For the Nigerian state, the discovery presents an opportunity to diversify the economy away from crude oil dependence, boost foreign exchange earnings, and attract billions of naira in local and foreign investments. If properly developed, the deposits could strengthen government revenues, expand industrial activity, and increase Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global critical minerals value chain.

The general populace could benefit through job creation, improved infrastructure, increased economic activities in mining communities, and the growth of ancillary industries such as processing, logistics, and manufacturing. However, experts caution that these benefits will depend on transparent management, environmental safeguards, and the curbing of illegal mining, which has historically deprived Nigeria of substantial mineral revenues.

The government’s strategy is not merely to export raw minerals but to develop an integrated mining ecosystem that encourages local processing and value addition. The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has repeatedly emphasized wealth creation, poverty reduction, and industrial growth as key objectives, while Kaduna State has already established structures and special-purpose vehicles to develop newly discovered mineral assets and attract credible investors.

Ultimately, the Kaduna discovery could become a defining moment for Nigeria’s mining industry, much like oil discoveries transformed the country’s economy decades ago. Whether it translates into broad-based prosperity will depend on effective regulation, investor confidence, transparent governance, and the government’s ability to ensure that the wealth generated reaches ordinary Nigerians rather than remaining an untapped geological treasure.
