ABUJA — The Minister of Youth Development has clarified that the Federal Government has not approved the adoption of Adire as the official uniform of members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), distancing the ministry from earlier reports that suggested such a decision had been taken.
The clarification follows widespread reports that the government had approved the use of the indigenous fabric for NYSC uniforms as part of efforts to promote Nigeria’s cultural heritage and revive the local textile industry. The reports sparked widespread public discussion, with many Nigerians welcoming the move while others questioned its implications.
Reacting to the reports, the minister said no approval has been granted for Adire to replace or form part of the NYSC uniform. The minister urged the public to disregard contrary claims, adding that although the Federal Government remains committed to promoting indigenous products and supporting the local textile sector, any policy decision on the NYSC uniform would be announced through official government channels.
