The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has extended its Advanced Satellite System Aeronautical Fixed Telecommunications Network (AFTN) from 14 to 26 airports nationwide, in a major step toward modernizing the country’s aeronautical communication system.
The AFTN upgrade, which operates on X.25 protocols, will serve as a backup to the soon-to-be-commissioned Aeronautical Message Handling System (AMHS) that runs on X.400 and X.500 protocols. The migration aligns with global Air Traffic Services Message Handling System (ATSMHS) standards, ensuring Nigeria’s seamless integration into international aviation communication networks.
NAMA’s Managing Director, Engr. Farouk Umar, has been lauded by industry stakeholders for driving the initiative, which strengthens safety and reliability across Nigerian airspace. The expanded network ensures critical flight messages remain available even in the event of a primary system failure.
With the development, controllers, pilots, and other aviation stakeholders can rely on a more resilient and efficient communication backbone that enhances operational safety. The project also paves the way for the commissioning of the Aeronautical Information Services (AIS) Automation Project, another milestone in Nigeria’s airspace modernization.
According to NAMA, these advancements underscore the agency’s commitment to innovation, safety, and efficiency, while aligning with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards and preparing the nation for next-generation aviation technologies.
