Obi’s Presidential Ambition Not Driven by Ego – Chimamanda Adichie

Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has said that Peter Obi’s desire to become Nigeria’s president stems from genuine concern for the country, not personal ambition or ego.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans, Adichie explained that unlike many Nigerian politicians who are desperate for power, Obi stands out for his sincerity and sense of duty.

“He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria, but he doesn’t need to be. And that is a very important distinction,” she said. “There are people who are desperate to become president, not because they have any good intentions for the country, but because of their egos.”

Adichie said her continued support for the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate is rooted in her love for Nigeria and her belief in his leadership qualities.

“Peter Obi embodies humility, integrity, and a sense of responsibility. He doesn’t expect to be praised for doing his job — to him, leadership is service,” she added.

According to her, Obi represents the kind of accountable leadership Nigeria urgently needs. “There’s a sense in Peter Obi that he’s accountable to the people. He doesn’t think he should lord it over anyone.”

Reflecting on their long friendship, Adichie noted that Obi has remained consistent in values and character over the years. “The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same in terms of his values. He is genuine, consistent, and curious — qualities that I believe are essential in a leader.”

While Obi has indicated that he would serve only one term if elected in 2027, Adichie declined to be drawn into the political debates ahead. However, her message was clear: Nigeria needs a leader who cares — and Peter Obi fits the bill.
