Otti Signs Landmark Senior Citizens Bill, Ignites Hope Across Abia

By Mary Onyia

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has signed the Senior Citizens Bill into law, a historic move that guarantees welfare and dignity for elderly citizens of the state.

Under the new law, every Abia indigene aged 60 years and above will receive a free monthly stipend, free medical care, and additional social benefits for the rest of their lives. The policy, described as the first of its kind in the region, has sparked widespread excitement and admiration within Abia, across Nigeria, and among the diaspora.

Since the announcement, commendations have poured in for Governor Otti, with many praising his administration for prioritising the most vulnerable members of society. Supporters say the initiative reflects a government driven not by political slogans, but by genuine compassion and practical action.

Many residents have described Otti’s leadership style as “people-centric”—one focused on solutions rather than excuses, and on service rather than blame. They note that instead of dwelling on past failures, the governor has chosen to roll up his sleeves and address real human needs.

Reacting to the development, Mr. Frank Ebi, an architect and businessman, called the policy a model worthy of national adoption.
“I wish the government at the centre would emulate this gesture by Governor Alex Otti and, for once, allow Nigerians to experience true good governance,” Ebi said. “What the people desire is simple—a government with compassion that puts citizens first.”

For many elderly citizens who have long struggled with the burden of healthcare costs and economic hardship, the new law represents more than policy—it is a lifeline and a powerful statement that their years of labour and sacrifice have not been forgotten.
