Some students of the University of Benin may have been trapped in a three-story building that collapsed in Ekosodin, an off-campus community dominated by students of the University of Benin, Vanguard newspaper reports.
Sources say the collapse may have been caused by the heavy downpour that started in the early hours of Saturday and which lasted till about 10 am.
Ekosodin shares borders with the University of Benin, and hosts a large number of student population.
Some unspecified number of the students from the University of Benin who live off campus are believed to have secured accommodation in the affected buildings.
Some of the trapped students have been reportedly rescued, while the search for others is ongoing.
The Dean of Student Affairs is said to be on the scene, coordinating rescue efforts alongside the university team, even as the university authority is yet to release any official statement to that effect.
