President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly removed the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun and approved the appointment of Tunji Disu as his replacement, in a move aimed at repositioning the Nigeria Police Force for greater efficiency and professionalism.
Senior police officials reportedly confirmed the development on Tuesday,
Egbetokun, who was appointed IGP in June 2023, is a seasoned officer with decades of experience in law enforcement and public administration. Before his elevation, he served as Deputy Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID). Over the course of his career, he also held strategic positions including Chief Security Officer to then Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu and Commissioner of Police in several commands. His tenure as IGP was marked by efforts to strengthen internal discipline, intelligence-led policing and inter-agency collaboration.
The outgoing police chief is widely regarded as a loyal and meticulous officer who rose steadily through the ranks after joining the Nigeria Police Force in 1990. During his time at the helm, he emphasized modernization, capacity building, and reforms aimed at improving public trust in the police.
The new Inspector-General, Tunji Disu, is equally a highly experienced officer with an extensive background in operations and intelligence. Prior to his appointment, Disu served in various capacities including Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and as head of tactical and investigative units within the Force. He is known for his firm operational style and strategic approach to combating violent crime and organized criminal networks.
With Disu’s appointment, expectations are high that the Nigeria Police Force will witness renewed drive in tackling insecurity across the country. Observers say the leadership transition comes at a critical time as the government intensifies efforts to address security challenges nationwide.
