United Nigeria Airlines has signed a major fleet expansion deal with Southwest Airlines for six Boeing 737-800 aircraft, in partnership with SkyWorks Holdings, LLC.
Executive Chairman, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, said the new fleet marks a turning point for the fast-growing Nigerian carrier: “After four years of reliable operations, these aircraft will enable us to launch new routes, offer more competitive fares, and create thousands of jobs. This supports efficient, direct travel and advances Nigeria’s economy in line with President Tinubu’s policies.”
Okonkwo praised Boeing’s technical support and Southwest’s maintenance culture, noting that United Nigeria Airlines plans to acquire an additional four 737-800 Next Generation jets—bringing the total order to 10—between Q1 2026 and Q1 2027.
At the signing ceremony in Dallas, Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales & Marketing for Africa, Anbessie Yitbarek, welcomed the airline to the 737 family, while Anders Hebrand, Chief Commercial Officer of SkyWorks Holdings, described the 737-800 as “the favorite aircraft in Africa’s growing aviation market.”
The Boeing 737-800 combines fuel efficiency, environmental sustainability, and passenger comfort, with a range of 2,935 nautical miles and seating for up to 189 passengers in a single-class configuration. The addition strengthens United Nigeria Airlines’ ability to compete regionally and globally.
