Wike/Fubara: As More Commissioners Resign, Tension Rises In Rivers State

As the crisis between Nyesom Wike, The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and Siminalayi Fubara, the Governor of Rivers State worsens, with no sign of reconciliation, more Commissioners of the state throw in the towels; bringing the number to ten; leaving the governor with just nine to work with.

Governor Fubara is now left with nine Commissioners out of a total of nineteen, who were initially appointed into the governor’s cabinet to work with.

The Commissioners who have resigned their appointments  include Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor (SAN), Commissioner for Works, Dr Des George-Kelly, Commissioner for Special Duties, Emeka Woke, Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, Mrs Inime Aguma, Commissioner for Finance, Isaac Kamalu.

Others are, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Chinedu Mmom, Commissioner for Housing, Dr Gift Worlu, Commissioner for Transport, Dr Jacobson Nbina and Commissioner for Environment, Austin Ben-Chioma resigned.

Virtually all the Commissioners from the four Ikwerre-speaking local government areas of the state, the FCT’s ethnic nationality, Ikwerre LGA, Prof. Mmom (Education), Emohua LGA, Woke (Special Projects), Obio/Akpor, Dr. Worlu (Housing) and Port-Harcourt City, Aguma (Social Welfare) have already resigned their positions. And reports have it that the pressure is on for the remaining ones to resign their appointments.

However, the governor has decided to soldier on with the commitment of governing the state despite all the distractions. Governor Fubara has resolved to work with the remaining members of his cabinet to moving the state forward.

His aide alleges that Nyesom Wike appointed almost all the cabinet members for the governor and never gave the governor the chance to pick his own men, adding that it is not surprising that the men are resigning.

Only on Wednesday, the governor sent some bulldozers to demolish the State House of Assembly Complex after it was torched on the night of October 29, 2023, relocating the activities of the house to the government house

The political drama in Rivers State will continue to play out, and no one is quite sure how it will end eventually.
