The Federal Government has evacuated 258 Nigerians from South Africa following a fresh wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of the country. The evacuees arrived in Nigeria after registering for the voluntary repatriation programme coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria. Government officials said the exercise was aimed at ensuring the safety of Nigerians who expressed fears for their lives and livelihoods amid growing hostility.
The latest evacuation comes against the backdrop of recurring xenophobic violence in South Africa, where foreign nationals, including Nigerians, have periodically been subjected to attacks, looting of businesses, intimidation, and forced displacement. Previous outbreaks of violence in 2008, 2015, 2019, and subsequent years led to deaths, destruction of property, and diplomatic tensions between Nigeria and South Africa. The renewed attacks have once again raised concerns over the safety of Nigerians living and working in the country.
The Federal Government said it would continue to monitor developments closely and provide assistance to Nigerians willing to return home. Officials disclosed that further evacuation exercises may be carried out in the coming weeks and months should the security situation deteriorate or if more citizens request repatriation. The government also pledged to engage South African authorities through diplomatic channels to ensure the protection of Nigerians and other foreign nationals residing in the country.
