President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday used his 2026 Democracy Day address to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to strengthening democracy, improving security, and expanding economic opportunities for Nigerians. Marking 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the President paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle and urged citizens to remain committed to democratic values.
President Tinubu, in his speech, pledged to bolster national security through the recruitment of additional personnel into the police, military, and other security agencies. He said the government would continue its offensive against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes threatening the country’s stability.
The President also directed his message to young Nigerians, encouraging them to build their future at home rather than seek opportunities abroad. He urged youths to “build here, code here, work here, and vote here,” while highlighting ongoing efforts to create jobs, support innovation, and expand opportunities in the digital economy.
Tinubu further called for peaceful, free, and credible governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states, stressing that democracy thrives when citizens participate actively and electoral processes are respected. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting democratic institutions and upholding the rule of law.
The President concluded by honouring the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists, including the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola and Kudirat Abiola, whose contributions he said helped secure the democratic freedoms Nigerians enjoy today. He pledged to continue working towards economic prosperity and political inclusion for all citizens.
