Mudashiru Obasa has been sworn in as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly for the second time, following his re-election after the resignation of Mojisola Meranda. Meranda stepped down as Speaker, paving the way for Obasa’s return to the position he previously held before his removal in January 2025.
Obasa’s re-election marks the resolution of the leadership turmoil that has plagued the Lagos State House of Assembly for the past seven weeks. He was first elected to the House in 2007 and became Speaker in June 2015. However, on January 13, 2025, Obasa was removed from office by more than two-thirds of the 40-member House, amid allegations of misconduct and abuse of office.
Following his removal, Obasa’s deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was swiftly elected as the new Speaker, making her the first female to hold the position in the South-West state. However, Obasa vehemently opposed his removal, challenging what he described as a “purported” impeachment that occurred in his absence.
With Obasa now reinstalled as Speaker, it is hoped that the leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly will finally come to an end.
