The ongoing conflict between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central escalated on Wednesday as Akpabio denied the allegations of sexual harassment made by Akpoti-Uduaghan during a Plenary session.

The allegations, which stemmed from a meeting at Akpabio’s residence in Akwa Ibom on December 8, 2023, were submitted in a petition to the Senate’s Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

Upon receiving the petition, the Senate swiftly dismissed it, declaring it “dead on arrival.” While some senators have criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan for her handling of the situation, others have condemned the Senate’s response, accusing the institution of biased treatment and disrespect towards the female senator.

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF), through a statement by its spokesperson, Prof. Abubakar Jiddere, expressed grave concern over the unfolding situation, emphasizing that at a time when gender sensitivity and respect for human rights are critical, the treatment of Akpoti-Uduaghan is deeply troubling. The NEF called for an independent investigation into the matter and demanded that Senate President Akpabio step aside to ensure an impartial inquiry.

“The Senate President’s actions are unacceptable and undermine the integrity of the Senate,” said the statement. “We urge that the Senate uphold fairness, justice, and respect, principles that are fundamental to maintaining Nigeria’s international reputation.”

Akpoti-Uduaghan has since refused to appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, which had been reviewing her dispute with Akpabio over seating arrangements in the chamber. The Senate had previously accused her of violating its standing rules.

Meanwhile, the Court on Wednesday ruled that the Nigerian Senate lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the matter as it has been taken to court.

The conflict between the two senators continues to stir debate about the treatment of women in high-level public offices and the need for fair and unbiased handling of such serious allegations.
