President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs following the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar, who is reportedly positioning for a political move ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President also forwarded the nomination of Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, pending Senate approval. The reshuffle, according to the presidency, aims to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic strategy and align foreign policy more closely with the administration’s economic agenda. “These adjustments are part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy architecture for greater efficiency, strategic engagement, and stronger global partnerships,” the statement said.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu, a former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is expected to lead Nigeria’s international relations with a focus on economic diplomacy, regional peace, and expanded global partnerships. The presidency highlighted her experience, noting that she “brings decades of diplomatic expertise and a deep understanding of Nigeria’s engagement with the global community.”

Enikanolaiye, a seasoned career diplomat who has served in multiple international postings, is expected to reinforce continuity within the foreign service. The presidency added that “his extensive experience across multiple diplomatic missions will support Nigeria’s evolving foreign policy objectives,” .” At the same time, President Tinubu urged both appointees to prioritise national interest and improve the welfare of Nigerians abroad.
