The United States of America has issued a stern warning to Kim Jong Un of North Korea not to use nuclear missiles against the United States or its ally South Korea or it would be the end of Kim Jung Un’s regime in North Korea.
Washington’s threat comes as President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea meets with its United States counterpart, Joe Biden on a six day state visit to the States.
Both leaders will have at the top of their discussion, the US Security shield for South Korea in the face of the increasing threat of a possible missile attack from the nuclear armed North Korea given the latter’s more frequent missile tests in the region.
Following the ever persistent threat of a nuclear attack from its neigbour in the North, South Koreans now believe more than ever that the country should develop its own nuclear weapons. Reports say Yoon has previously hinted Seoul could pursue this option, but it is highly unlikely that Washington will give its nod to that, given the attendant problems that could arise from that.
Experts believe, however, that the tough stance of the United States, and the tone of its warning to North Korea on the nuclear missiles is enough to send the ’message’ across to Jim Jung Un
A retired South Korean general, Chun In-burn, is of the opinion that publicly, “North Korea will downplay the message of reassurances by the US regarding nuclear deterrence,” according to AFP report.
But experts are of the opinion that closer cooperation between its self-declared arch enemies, Washington and Seoul, is bound to concern Kim Jong Un’s regime, even though there could be more missile tests.
But behind closed doors “they will get the message: if they use nuclear weapons it will be the end of the regime”, Chun In-burn said.
