Bill Gates is in Tokyo this week to meet with cabinet ministers, parliamentarians, researchers, and innovators on how Japan can sustain and expand its leadership role in global health. Through major contributions to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and The Global Fund, Japan has helped cut global child mortality in half and saved millions of lives—a record Gates says can be built upon to save millions more.
During the visit, Gates will also engage with scientists and executives from Japanese life science companies at a forum on the future of innovation, research, and development in global health. The discussions will center on accelerating breakthrough technologies and ensuring that lifesaving innovations reach the world’s most vulnerable populations.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has long worked with governments, international organizations, and private-sector partners to tackle global health challenges, from infectious disease to maternal and child health. Gates’ Tokyo meetings are aimed at reinforcing Japan’s policy commitment to global health financing and encouraging continued collaboration to drive equitable access to new medical advances worldwide.
