FG Unveils New Digital-Focused Curriculum for Secondary Schools

By Our Reporter

The Federal Government has released a revised national curriculum for junior and senior secondary schools, designed to align Nigeria’s education system with global standards and prepare students for the modern economy. The new curriculum, which takes effect from September 2025, introduces subjects in digital literacy, programming, artificial intelligence, and entrepreneurship.

According to the Ministry of Education, digital literacy and basic entrepreneurship will now be compulsory at the junior secondary level. Coding and robotics will also be introduced to give students early exposure to technology-driven problem solving.

For senior secondary students, the reforms expand into more advanced areas, including programming, artificial intelligence, data science, and cybersecurity. These will run alongside existing core subjects to ensure both academic balance and digital readiness.

The Ministry stated that implementation will involve extensive teacher training, provision of learning materials, and partnerships with private sector players to strengthen infrastructure for digital education.

Education experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that it will not only prepare Nigerian students for opportunities in the global digital economy but also help tackle local challenges such as youth unemployment and the innovation gap.
